Potty the Plant

Potty the Plant ★★★★☆

By Little Big Stack Theater Company

Review: Gilded Balloon Patter House

"When mysterious things start happening at Little Boo Boo's General Hospital, a ragtag bunch of dysfunctional nurses must pull together to save the day. What could be happening to all the missing children? Will the beautiful Miss Lacey ever find true love? Is there more to the nasty-looking Dr Acula than meets the eye?"

Is Potty the Plant a musical?

Potty The Plant’ is a dark-comedy musical starring Potty, a singing, talking, tap-dancing pot plant. Debuting at the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe, Potty proved an audience favourite and he's back to cause more chaos this year.

Blending a hospital-based mystery with irresistible characters, catchy rock tunes and some of the funniest jokes I've heard at the fringe, 'Potty the Plant' is a fully realised madcap musical delight.

The character of Dr. Acula is such an inspired idea, it makes me wonder why no-one has thought of doing that before. The actor who plays Dr. Acula (Hudson Tong) and the actor who plays Lacey (Sarah Oakland) are outstanding. But the small cast of six are all great, and they work so hard!

There's a lot of funky footwork to go along with the ridiculous antics and fast-paced plot. The songs are ingenious and the entire casts' voices are excellent. The puppeteer behind (or underneath!) Potty lives in a cupboard for most of the show but they even manage to make fun of his situation; and he's brilliant.

The production is a little rough around the edges and they did have a few sound / mic issues with feedback stinging our ears a couple of times but honestly, it didn't matter. I was having so much fun, I was too busy grinning to care.

The story and the jokes are darker and more twisted than you would expect, so despite the cheerful child-friendly appearing poster - this is not one for the kids.

Potty the plant is a musical B-movie on stage. It's hilarious, heartfelt and full of unforgettable characters. An inspired creation. Long live Potty! ★★★★☆

Potty and his pals are at the Gilded Balloon Patter House until 26 August.
