Maxwell the Bubbleologist makes his Edinburgh Fringe debut with The Flying Bubble Show. South African Maxwell will be at the Underbelly Circus Hub with The Flying Bubble Show from 2nd to 23rd August.
For his annual review of children's shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, my 13 year old nephew Oscar headed along to see Maxwell's show and reports back with his honest opinion.

The Flying Bubble Show by Maxwell the Bubbleologist ★★★☆☆
review: 07 August 2025 | Underbelly Circus Hub at Edinburgh Festival Fringe
The Flying Bubble Show is a unique theatrical experience for ages 3 and over. Hosted daily at Underbelly's Circus Hub on the Meadows, Maxwell the Bubbleologist plays at one of the two dazzling circus tents - The Beauty - and promises an enchanting spectacle for children and adults alike. The show was nominated for the Brighton Fringe Best Family Show in 2024.
Exploring universal themes of curiosity, perseverance and finding joy in unexpected places, The Flying Bubble Show combines storytelling, aerials and bubbles!
Let's find out what thirteen year old Oscar makes of it.

Oscar's review of The Flying Bubble Show at Edinburgh Fringe 2025
The show was a man who does things with bubbles.
I liked the calming bits, the ambient music and the hundreds of tiny bubbles. The smoke filled bubbles were good.
It was really for younger children, because of the way he was saying stuff. Overall not really for me.

Oscar's mum adds:
Maxwell the Bubbleologist tells the tale of how he became a Bubbleologist by using his imagination and believing in his dreams. The gentle and charming story is set to an atmospheric soundtrack and accompanied by plenty of bubbles of all shapes and sizes.
The spectacle of Maxwell whooshing above the stage whilst conjuring an avalanche of bubbles was enthralling. His skill in manipulating the bubbles is amazing. The show seems to be aimed at children under 10. The content would appeal to a wider age group, but Maxwell is definitely talking to the wee ones in the room with his style of storytelling and audience interaction.
I felt that the show was a little long for the younger audience members; 45 min would be better than 1 hour.
Before and after the show there were bubble play activities set up outside the tent making the whole experience much more hands on and interactive.
Overall it was an enchanting and calming experience for little ones and their families, a great wee break from the hustle and bustle of the festival.

Overall Lisa in the Theatre rating: 3 stars - looks gorgeous but perhaps not one for budding teenagers!
