Susan Harrison: Should I Still Be Doing This? ★★★★☆
review: 11 August 2025 | Gilded Balloon at Appleton Tower, Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Susan Harrison returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2025 with her 6th solo show 'Should I Still Be Doing This?' The Olivier award-winning performer (with Showstopper) and BAFTA winner (for Class Dismissed) is a permanent cast member of Showstopper! The Improvised Musical and Mischief Movie Night, and is a bit of an Edinburgh Fringe veteran.
In her latest solo comedy show 'Should I Still Be Doing This?' Harrison plays a number of bizarre characters from an insecure Sindy doll to a cantankerous Panda who's fed up with tourists taking photos of him in the zoo. Armed with a rail of intriguing props and costumes, Susan races through sketches filled with her five (or is it six?) central characters.
Right from the get go Susan's audience work is exquisite. She talks with, and involves as many people as possible (who want to be involved - good vibes only in this room!) and by the end of the show, it feels like we're in a room full of friends. A room who've been through therapy together. Pip at the Appleton Tower is a very small room to be fair, and it is a tad awkward for Susan to maneuver around her audience, but she does her best to give everyone full view of her extraordinary characters. You don't want to miss Sindy's marshmallow cheeks!
Susan has structure to her set but she also uses improv and audience suggestions to great effect. For one of her characters - A woman who has swallowed a girl in a well (yes really) - Susan shows off her impressive ventriloquism skills too.
But most impressive of all is Susan's accent work. With each change of costume and new character comes an accent so spot on the money I would genuinely believe that she was Scottish..., or Australian. Her accents are flawless, and her Scottish accent is the best I've ever heard from a non-native.
The highlight of the sketches and characters for me was Fleur Delish; a young, entitled lifestyle podcaster who can tell what someone's spirit animal is just by looking at them. Her podcast is crammed full of those annoying adverts - you know the ones - all voiced by Susan herself, and they are genius!
Susan Harrison's: Should I Still Be Doing This? is a brilliant showcase of modern character comedy. Her wild variety of characters and imaginative settings are inspired. This show and these characters are uniquely Susan Harrison, and it's all an absolute joy from beginning to end.. I could've sat and watched her for hours. ★★★★☆
