Home, I’m Darling received its World Premiere at Theatr Clwyd in 2018, before running at the National Theatre and the Duke of York’s theatre in the West End, winning the 2019 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.
Now embarking on it's first UK tour, we welcomed it to Glasgow on Valentine's night.
As the action opens on stage we witness a perfect 1950's housewife happily preparing to welcome her hard working husband home to their perfectly presented house.
*Spoiler* It's only later we realise that all is not as it seems. This lifestyle is a choice and a fantasy. They are pretending to live in the 50's and to forgo many of today's gadgets and luxuries - much to the bemusement of their family, friends and coworkers.
It's a great premise for a play and there's much to explore over the next couple of hours. It makes me wish I was a part of a 'Book Club' type group for theatre pals; it's one of these scenarios I could debate for hours and I'd love to hear others opinions. Are we really better off today than we were in the 50's?!
The performances, especially from BAFTA-winner Jessica Ransom in the lead role, are great.
I'd marry Jessica Ransom! She's Doris Day perfect in her candy-coloured world. Her costumes (i.e. 1950's dresses) are divine.
The set is gorgeous and cleverly designed to allow the action to flow freely between the rooms.
As thought-provoking as the story was, I expected a lot more humour from the "Olivier Award Winner for Best New Comedy". It's sweet and gentle, sometimes amusing, but nothing more.
It's a well written play, beautiful to look at and the cast seem lovely.
A nice way to spend a pleasant few hours in the theatre.
