The Hen Night ★★★★☆

Review: 12 June 2026 | Òran Mór, Glasgow

The Hen Night by acclaimed Scottish writer / Director Debbie Hannan follows three Glasgow besties as they set out on a fun-filled Hen weekend to the faraway land of Edinburgh.

Jade (Dani Heron) has organised best pal Coral's Hen Weekend like a military operation. There's an agenda packed with activities, and a spreadsheet to ensure the fun levels never wane. Together with Lilac (Laura Lovemore - who also doubles up as Coral) and Amber (Anna Russell-Martin - who doubles up as uninvited guest Luna), the trio board the Scotrail train to Edinburgh, downing plenty of tequila shots on their journey. As they discuss how lucky Coral has been to find the perfect man, they start to wonder if he's actually all that perfect, and if they even know him at all.

As festivities kick off at a bar in Edinburgh later that night, the three friends are blindsided by the arrival of Coral's cousin, stunning Irish model Luna. She sets them on a mission to stop their hen from marrying her ghastly fiancé, and to save her from a fate worse than being single.

Debbie Hannan's story is good - this isn't just an ordinary Hen Night - but it's her dialogue that sparkles. Hannan's script is full of sharp observations and hilarious lines. The cast of phenomenal female Scottish talent bring it to life under Laila Noble's playful, perceptive direction, and the result is a fast-paced, wisecracking, authentic Scottish friendship trio that's forthright, fearless and fiery.

Dani Heron, Laura Lovemore and Anna Russell-Martin make for one of the strongest female casts to grace the 'A Play A Pie and A Pint' stage at Òran Mór - ever. And as they involve the audience in their messy schemes and chant their way to finding their inner goddesses, they deliver a welcome, empowering message about the power of friendship.

Heather Grace Currie's set is simple but beautiful this week: gauze curtains and pretty lights. But that's all that's needed to set the scene for the various Hen Do activities. The stage team do a brilliant job with copious expertly timed sound and lighting effects that elevate the show, and coupled with this superb cast's incredible energy and comic timing, this is a slick, sassy joyride with laughs and personality galore.

The Hen Night is an entertaining, non-stop laugh-out-loud romp. It's a brilliant fit for the one-hour 'A Play, A Pie and A Pint' lunchtime theatre slot, and an uplifting, inspiring shot of gallus Glaswegian girl power. Brilliant fun ★★★★☆

Writer Debbie Hannan said:

"The Hen Night is about one last messy night out with your pal before she gets married; situations that push friendship to the limit; and ultimately the (super)power of a girl’s best friends. It’s fun and fierce, with a dash of Greek chorus too, and now has a cast of the finest, funniest, most talented actresses in Scotland to bring it to life."
