REVIEW: NewsRevue, Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2024

NewsRevue Edinburgh Fringe 2024

NewsRevue

Directed by Micha Mirto

Underbelly George Square, Udderbelly

⭐⭐⭐⭐

NewsRevue is a Guinness World Record-breaking current affairs, parody song and sketch show.

I firmly believe there's something for everyone in a NewsRevue show. Their finger is firmly on the pulse of all the horrors and joys that plague our world and our lives daily. They excel at mocking the more ridiculous elements of society, events, politicians and celebrities that absolutely deserve to be mocked. And some of their routines are so up to date you have to ask yourself how they do it.

Set to contemporary and well-loved tunes, each NewsRevue skit lasts a few minutes at most - perfect for those with short attention spans! They race through sketch after inspired sketch accompanied at all times by a brilliant and playful onstage Musical Director (Fergus Carver). From Barbie’s 'I’m Just Ken' to an Eminem rap and the unmistakable opening bars of Disney's Frozen, the music is varied but always fitting and always bolstered by biting satirical lyrics.

This year's cast and all-new material are stronger than ever. As a musical theatre fan I was delighted by their opening routine that set the ups and down of the recent UK generation election to all the best songs from Wicked. 'No-one mourns the Tories' and 'Un-Popular' had the audience roaring with laughter. And the show had only just begun. There followed sketches about the Euros, the Olympics and everything from climate change to Scottish politics. I particularly loved 'Biden meets The King' and later a play-date between two other world leaders. My heart soared when they used one of my all-time favourite musicals 'Come from Away' to parody a trip to the Edinburgh Fringe - "I am a Highlander" is sheer genius.

NewsRevue are the creme-de-la-creme of quickfire satirical sketch shows. It feels like they've picked up on every ridiculous line that anyone in the public eye has said over the past year. It's keenly observed and expertly delivered. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't enjoy NewsRevue.
