Death of an Influencer | A Play, A Pie and A Pint 2025 ★★★★☆

Review: 4 November 2025, Òran Mór, Glasgow

Death of an Influencer is a new comedy-drama play from Glasgow-based writer Matt Anderson that explores how hard it is to be proud of your kids when they’re more successful than you.

Aging actor Gerry (George Drennan) has spent his career performing in small theatre productions with his adoring partner Peter (Andrew Agnew), but they've always dreamt of something bigger. Meanwhile Gerry's 17 year-old social media star son Tyler (Alexander Tait) has a fan-base his dad can only dream of, having gained over 11 million followers online. When Tyler arrives at his dad's latest production of "Death of a Sail's-man" with big news, Gerry may finally have to confront the reality that his son's career has eclipsed his own.

Matt Anderson's play is beautifully constructed, delivering a touching, but also a cautionary tale for the modern age. The rise of social media and mega-star online influencers is still a relatively new phenomenon, and it's fascinating to see one scenario played out here that imagines the impact of having a child achieve seemingly overnight fame, in contrast to the traditional years of training, experience and unrewarded slog.

With intelligent observations about creative careers, family dynamics and failed ambitions, Anderson's smart script is full of stinging swipes and razor-sharp, laugh-out loud moments which the incredible cast deliver with aplomb. The smart comedy drama is relentlessly fun and captivating, but it's also horrifying to watch at times. How cruel families can be to one another! I wished I could look away from the father's jealousy at his son's success - I actually found myself wincing at some of his words.

Director Edoardo Berto gets the best out of all three cast members here who deliver some of the strongest performances I've seen at A Play, A Pie and A Pint. George Drennan, Andrew Agnew and Alexander Tait are all perfectly cast, believable, hilarious and at times devastating in their respective roles.

I had no idea how they were going to resolve this one, but they did - perfectly - and right on the 60 minute mark. With creative staging and an inspired set from Heather Grace Currie, Death of an Influencer is another fine example of the exciting new writing being staged at A Play, A Pie and A Pint that is full of fresh ideas and bursting with talent ★★★★☆

Writer Matt Anderson says:

“I’m incredibly excited to be a part of A Play, A Pie and A Pint for the first time. The entire team has been wonderful and so committed in helping this show reach its full potential, and I truly could not be happier with the talented cast bringing these characters to life. This play is about how being proud of others doesn’t always come easy, even when we want it to, and the way in which great expectations of ourselves can sometimes hurt the people around us. It’s a comedy, it’s a tragedy, but above all, it’s sanguine, and I really hope everyone enjoys it.”
