review: 25 August 2025 | King's Theatre, Glasgow
Danny Robins spooky stage phenomenon 2:22 A Ghost Story has set out on a brand-new UK tour for 2025 and 2026. The record-breaking supernatural play returns to Glasgow this week following seven West End seasons and a previous UK and Ireland tour in 2023.
The expertly crafted ghost story takes place in a young couple's potentially haunted new home as they are in the midst of renovating the old house, knocking down walls and uncovering secrets.
Jenny (Stacey Dooley) believes her new house is haunted. While husband Sam (Kevin Clifton) has been away on a trip, Jenny has heard footsteps and other noises in their baby's room at the same time every night, at 2:22 am. When Sam returns home, the couple invite old friends Lauren (Shvorne Marks) and Ben (Grant Kilburn) over for dinner and they all stay up until 2:22 am waiting and wondering what is in the house.
This is my second time seeing 2:22 A Ghost Story (albeit with a different cast) and this repeat viewing gives me a renewed appreciation for just how cleverly written and staged this complex piece of thrilling, modern theatre is. I knew what I was looking for this time around and it only heightened my enjoyment! Skillfully directed by Matthew Dunster and Gabriel Vega Weissman, and beautifully performed by the latest cast - I beamed throughout the entire show (when I didn't have my eyes closed in fear.)
Well known for hit podcasts Uncanny and The Battersea Poltergeist, stage show 2:22 A Ghost Story is Danny Robins' masterpiece. Expertly woven with a sharp story, plenty of tension and a multitude of clear clues - it's a work of stage genius. The tone too is perfect: Funny, tense and realistic, it never veers into silly or ridiculous. Expertly choreographed with precision blocking, lighting and sound - this is an intelligent, enthralling play for fans of ghost stories and spooky theatre.
2:22 A Ghost Story 2025/26 UK tour cast
The 2025 / 2026 UK tour production of 2:22 stars real-life couple Kevin Clifton and Stacey Dooley in the lead roles of Sam and Jenny. Still best known as a dancer and for his time as a professional on Strictly Come Dancing, Kevin Clifton has made a name for himself in recent years as a leading-man on stage. And quite rightly so. Yet again here he proves that the stage is where he belongs, his performance as Sam, captivating and sincere.
Stacey Dooley is best known for her hard-hitting TV documentaries but she also played the role of Jenny in 2:22 in the West End. She's completely convincing and heartbreaking as the terrified new mum in the new tour production, the chemistry between Dooley and Clifton palpable and sincere. Supported by Grant Kilburn as Ben and Shvorne Marks as Lauren, this small cast do an excellent job of playing the high-spirited group of friends who bicker and joke with one another as the tension and fear in the house rises.
Technically 2:22 A Ghost Story is exquisite. Anna Felischle's intriguing open-plan kitchen / living-room set is an excellent backdrop for the story. The partly refurbished rooms, swinging doors and working props all add intrigue to the modern haunted-house setting. There are jump scares and theatre trickery aplenty - and with a concise running time of just 50 minutes per act (for the 2 act show) this is a gripping play that you won't want to look away from for a second. 2:22 A Ghost Story is better than ever. ★★★★★
2:22 A Ghost Story plays at the King's Theatre, Glasgow from Monday 25 - Saturday 30 August 2025 and then continues on tour across the UK including to Edinburgh Playhouse through 2026. Find full UK dates and cast details below.
