A huge hit at the Traverse Festival 2024, So Young is a multi-award-winning comedy play written by Douglas Maxwell and directed by Gareth Nicholls. It is set to return to the Traverse Theatre stage and to the newly reopened Citizens Theatre in Glasgow this autumn.

At once both hilarious and deeply moving, So Young follows recently bereaved forty-something Milo as he invites his two oldest friends Davie and Liane over to drink wine, listen to records and reminisce about the olden days, It promises to be a great night reconnecting, there’s nothing better than catching up with pals. But there’s something else. He wants them to meet the new love of his life. Her name is Greta. And she’s twenty years old.

From Douglas Maxwell, the celebrated writer of The Sheriff of Kalamaki, and previous Citz show, Fever Dream: Southside, So Young sees an innocuous Glasgow evening slide into ruin as old friends face the challenges of middle age, growing apart and losing those close to them.

So Young won a Scotsman Fringe First award 2024, won Best New Play, CATS (Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland) 2025 and the Hector MacMillan Award for Best New Scottish Play 2025.

Douglas Maxwell, writer, So Young, said:

“Having the chance to share So Young with a new audience is an honour and a thrill. The Traverse Theatre was where it debuted during the Fringe in 2024 and it's always been a very special place for new plays in Scotland and for my work in particular. And to perform on the brand spanking new main stage of the Citizens Theatre is an incredible thing. Produced by the Traverse Theatre together with Raw Material, this is a fantastic production, with an amazing cast, and I'm sure audiences will love the humour and humanity of the show."

Producers Gillian Garrity and Margaret-Anne O’Donnell said:

“New writing is a crucial part of our programme and theatre ecology and So Young by Douglas Maxwell is an exemplary example of this - funny, fast-paced, smart, poignant and entertaining. This production premiered to incredible audience and critical feedback at TravFest in 2024. We are now thrilled to be bringing it back as part of the newly reopened Citizens Theatre's inaugural programme, as well as revisiting the Traverse Theatre in October this year. We hope to see you there.”
