Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat review, UK Tour, Glasgow 2022

'Joseph' with Jason Donovan in the title role and with Linzi Hateley as the narrator was the first show I ever saw in London's West End thanks to a kind family member. That was at the London Palladium Theatre over 30 years ago! Wow.

Now they are both back and on tour with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat across the UK. Joy!

I started formally reviewing in July 2022, just after this show unfortunately. But a few quick thoughts on this new production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat:

🌈 5 stars for Linzi Hateley and Jac Yarrow. And the conductor, Dr John Rigby. So charismatic, talented and very obviously in love with his job. Lovely to see. All were outstanding.

But there were a few things about this modern production of Joseph that I didn't get along with.

❤️ As good as the kids were, I don't think they should have been playing the adult roles of some of the brothers. That just felt cheap.

💛 Similarly, I don't think Linzi should've been playing Jacob in addition to the narrator. She was brilliant at it, of course, she brought so much humour to the role. But come on; does this production really need to cut those corners?

💚 Lastly - where was the big coat?! At the finale. This is the enduring memory I have of all the productions I saw of Joseph when I was younger. The Joseph always gets his moment with the massive stage-wide coat at the end. I missed it. Another cost save I presume. Or maybe I'm just old-fashioned.

Bah humbug.

💙 Still loved it. It brought back so many lovely memories. A great show to get children into musical theatre.
